Navy Career Intermission Program: A Path to Retain Valuable Experience and Training

The Navy Career Intermission Program (CIPP) is a pilot program designed to provide greater flexibility in the career paths of Marines, while retaining valuable experience and training. This program allows service members to temporarily transition from active duty to the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) for a period of one to three years, providing an opportunity to pursue personal or professional goals outside the Marine Corps.

One of the primary benefits of the CIPP is that it provides full active duty Tricare health benefits for Marines and their dependents, as well as a monthly stipend equivalent to two times one-thirty-thousandth of their basic pay. Additionally, service members are entitled to a one-time move to a CONUS location of their choice for the duration of their participation in the program.

The long-term intent of the CIPP is to provide a means for Marines to return to active duty after completing their intermission period, while also allowing them to pursue personal or professional goals. This program is limited by law to the selection of no more than 20 officers and 20 enlisted participants per calendar year through 2015.
